ATV Aburi
ATV Aburi is a fun way to enjoy the scenic views of the Eastern Region. With the opportunity to have a quad bike tour or go quad biking in the mountains, your holidays, road trips, excursions or honeymoon just got more interesting. Take a tour of the picturesque Aburi mountains on a quad bike through bushes, gravel roads, farms (where you can pick some fruit!), and culminating in a wonderful trip to the waterfall.
The views here are breathtaking and the experience, really unforgettable. There is more than just quad biking here though. Other services at the facility include paintballing and air rifle shooting, archery and combat archery. So if you are up for a memorable adventure or just pure fun and exciting activities, then ATV Aburi is the place for you.
Boti Falls
Boti Falls is located roughly 17km from Eastern region’s capital Koforidua in a place known as Manya Krobo. It takes roughly 90 minutes to get there if you are driving from the capital city. There is so much history behind how the place was discovered and even the forest in which it’s situated. There are a few food stops along your way, like the Linda Dor Main restaurant.
Once at the falls itself, you’ll be amazed at just how beautiful the natural surroundings are. Make sure to carry enough snacks and fluids for this particular trip since your endurance will be tested; there are 250 steps to climb through the jungle just to get to the main falls! But one thing is guaranteed, and that is the splendid experience of a trip to Ghana’s most popular and significant landmarks. While here, you can also take a 45-minute hike to the umbrella rock and the 3-headed palm tree.
For an additional fee (10 GHS in 2020) you can take a canoe ride under the falls and further down the river.
A tip: If you want to enjoy the beauty of the falls at its best, the best time to visit is in the rainy season!
Shai Hills Resource Reserve
The Shai Hills Resource Reserve is approximately an hour from Accra. Located towards the north of Accra and bordering the Akosombo road, the reserve is home to some of Ghana’s best wildlife. The best time to have the most sighting of the various animals like the antelopes, monkeys, bushbuck etc., is in the mornings.
Similarly, there is also the opportunity to visit the Obonu tem and Se yo caves on the Hioweyo and Sayu Hills while there. Hence you have an entire package of an experience when you visit the Shai Hills Resource Reserve.
Aburi Botanical Gardens
If you love tranquility and nature, then Aburi Gardens is the place to visit. The beautiful botanical reserve gives you a place to relax and enjoy a fun yet peaceful time with friends and family. There are lots of trees under whose shade you can bask while enjoying a good book and lawns you can relax on while eating or just hanging out with friends. The Gardens is also a great location for family or group picnics.
Only an hour from Accra, a planned road trip is the best way to get there. There are hotels and resorts like Hillburi, Peduase Lodge, etc., to stop by and enjoy a delicious meal. You may also like to stay at the Aburi Garden Hotel, an old colonial era building located inside the Gardens. The drive to the gardens is really breathtaking as you get a view of the city of Accra, especially at night.
Tip: There are many different species of butterflies and birds here. Be ready to see some very rare and exotic birds, butterflies and insects. Also, the views in the gardens make for some beautiful backdrops for your pictures.

The Umbrella Rock
Found around the same site as the Boti Falls, the Umbrella Rock is roughly a 40-minute walk or hike in the forest from the falls. If you’re feeling lazy (probably after the hike down to the falls itself), you can also get there by car in about 10 minutes. The Umbrella Rock which is also referred to as Akatamann, meaning ‘umbrella’ in the Akan language, is certainly a site worth seeing.
Tip: Nearby is a rock known as the Fertility rock, believed to bless young ladies who sit on it with twins or triplets.
The Atewa Range
Located near the town of Kibi, the Atewa range consists of steep sided hills with fairly flat summits. There are over 200 species of birds and more than 400 species of butterflies at the range. You can enjoy a birding expedition and a canopy walkway at the botanical gardens. There is also the Aburi craft market close by which you can visit once your tour at the range is over.
Akosombo Dam
Located on Lake Volta (one of the largest manmade lakes in the world) the Akosombo dam is a hydroelectric dam which was fully constructed in 1965. A tour at this monumental installation gives you an opportunity to have spectacular views of the dam itself, the lake and its surrounding vegetation.
Also, within the area is a cruise ship called the Dodi Princess which gives you an opportunity to traverse the Lake Volta. While on deck you’ll have the chance to have some good barbecue and cocktails. The environment is also serene and there are several holiday resorts around. A trip to the Eastern region won’t be complete without this experience.
Akaa Waterfalls
Akaa Falls is located 2km from a village called Akyeremateng and 7km from Boti Falls. The waterfalls gives visitors a chance swim at the base of the cliff and multiple convenient areas for picnics and relaxation. The Akaa waterfalls also has 250 platforms on its cliff which give visitors a dazzling view of the forest. Although not as popular as the Boti falls, this is one of Ghana’s beautiful landmarks in the Eastern region. It is the icing on the cake for a beautiful trip!
