How to get a new driving license in Ghana

Acquiring a new driving license in Ghana isn’t as complicated as many people think. In this article, you will get all the necessary information you need to get a driving license in Ghana.

Types/classes of driving license in Ghana

Driving license in Ghana has been categorized into 6 classes:

  1. Class A - This is the driving license you need if you intend to use a motorcycle.
  2. Class B - Class B applies to drivers who intend to drive vehicles that carry from 1 to 15 passengers such as saloon cars, pickups or minibuses.
  3. Class C - This is for drivers of vehicles that carry from 1 to 45 passengers.
  4. Class D - For drivers of heavy-duty vehicles and buses that contain a maximum of 65 passengers.
  5. Class E - Class E is a special license for drivers of industrial vehicles such as forklifts, bulldozers, etc.
  6. Class F - Class F is for drivers of heavy carrying vehicles such as articulators.

Except for motorcyclists, all persons applying for a new driving license will start with a Class B license and work their way up if they intend to.

Basic requirements for getting a driving license in Ghana

  1. Applicant must be a minimum of 18 years
  2. Applicant must be able to read and write
  3. Applicant must be in a healthy physical condition and must also be of sound mind

How to apply for a driving license in Ghana

  • First step is to purchase and complete “Form F” and “F1” from any DVLA office.
  • You will then be taken through an eye test, and your biometric data will be taken.
  • After going through the eye test successfully, you will be issued with a “Learners Permit”, “ Learners(L) plate, Highway Code and Syllabus.
  • You will have to go through a mandatory 48-hour training with any DVLA accredited driving school.
  • Upon completing your training, you will undergo a written test (Computer-Based) and a practical driving test which also includes the identification of road signs and markings.
  • Once you are successful with your tests, you proceed to make payments for your Driver’s License and P-Plate.
  • After making the payment, you will be issued with a temporary license to be used for 3 months.
  • Your actual driving license will be issued to you when your temporary license expires.

Cost of driving license in Ghana

At the time of writing this article (September, 2022), these are the charges for a driving license in Ghana

  • Learner’s permit - GHS 160
  • Road sign and Driving test - GHS 100
  • New Driving license - GHS 257
  • License upgrade - GHS 345
  • Renewal of expired license - GHS 155
  • Replacement of a lost driving license - GHS 205

The process detailed in this article will take between five weeks to three months to complete, and your license will have to be renewed every two years.
