Personally, I try to be very careful about what goes onto my body and especially in my hair. Many everyday fruits, vegetables and oils easily available in shops in Ghana can be blended together to create very natural hair and skincare products that provide the same benefits to your body that many of the popular cosmetics from the top brands do. Adding a natural hair conditioner to your haircare routine will ensure you always have smooth, shining hair that’s less frizzy and easily detangles.
Today, I’m going to share 3 of my favorite homemade hair mask recipes with you. I hope you enjoy making and using them as much as I do.
Coconut oil, honey, avocado and coconut milk mask
Before we move on to making our own natural and 100% organic hair conditioner, I will give you a little background on why I choose certain specific ingredients. It is important to note that aside the conditioner helping to soften your hair and making it smoother after each cleansing, using the right ingredients will enable you to enjoy additional benefits. Make sure you are not allergic to any of to the ingredients you use, since this might cause undesired reactions or aggravate certain medical conditions.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is an important ingredient in our DIY hair mask. It protects hair from damage and protein loss. It moisturizes hair and lowers chances of breakage; studies show coconut oil has a sun protection factor of 8 hence, can protect hair from sun damage. It works also as a scalp conditioner and deep conditioner for the hair. It is useful in preventing lice and dandruff.
Honey
Honey has been used for many centuries both for food and its exceptional medicinal properties. I still remember fondly how honey was our parents’ go to remedy for the treatment of coughs and sore throat (together with ginger!) It’s also widely used to treat wounds and as a salve to heal burns.
The following are the benefits of honey for hair: It promotes hair growth, it prevents hair loss, keeps the scalp healthy and has antioxidant properties that prevent hair breakage.
Coconut milk
Coconut milk helps to restore split ends and to strengthen hair. It also reduces hair loss, restores dry scalp and hair, promotes hair growth, and heals damaged hair.
Avocado
Aside being a tasty super fruit with enormous health benefits when used as food, avocado helps with the following when applied to your hair: moisturizing and rejuvenating the scalp, promoting healthy hair by making it long and strong and helping to heal damaged hair.
Based on these reasons, it’s easy to understand why using this homemade hair mask every day after you wash your hair will leave it healthy and make it feel nicer to touch.
